Lexmark is one of numerous printer manufacturers that installs smart chips in printer ink cartridges. If you try to refill an empty cartridge with a third-party ink refill kit, your printer won't recognize it. This is because the smart chip reads "empty" even though you've just refilled the ink reservoir. Fortunately, chip reset devices are legal and widely available from online retailers. Purchase a reset device for your specific Lexmark model or use a universal reset device.
1. Refill the empty Lexmark ink cartridge according to the instructions provided in the ink refill kit.
2. Locate the gold-toned smart chip on the ink cartridge. It's usually found on the bottom or front end of the cartridge.
3. Place the smart chip against the pins on the reset device. A red light will flash to show you that the chip is engaged. When the light turns green, usually six or seven seconds later, the cartridge chip is reset and ready to use.
